As the architect, structural and MEP engineer, SOM was charged with creating a cohesive tower that is both iconic and highly efficient. The building is eccentric in its form, with a dramatic, skyward curvature evocative of the region’s natural scenery and cultural heritage. An essential part of the architectural expression, as well as the most efficient structural solution, eight mega-columns rise upward from the ground, resulting in an uninterrupted, undulating 57-story silhouette that appears as if in constant motion.

This distinctive curving profile coalesces structural efficiency, sustainability, and resilience into a singular, streamlined design that solves several challenges at once. The tower conceals mechanical systems, brings in fresh air, and reduces material quantities while providing the strength and flexibility to resist seismic forces—key contributors to its LEED Platinum and WELL Platinum certifications. The layout of the ground level is designed to promote movement. While most office towers in Qianjiang Century Town occupy full city blocks, One Century possesses a porous and welcoming base design.

Its series of open spaces will become a new gathering place for the district, while above, the tower’s unique geometry and structure serves as a timeless landmark, destined to leave an indelible presence in Hangzhou’s expanding skyline.
